The chess tournament for the Transatlantic Cup between UT Dallas and the University of Belgrade will be taking place today at two locations on campus: in the Davidson Auditorium of the Naveen Jindal School of Management and in the McDermott Library Conference Room (MC 4.214) located on the fourth floor. Both events begin promptly at 12:30pm. Light refreshments will be served at the library.

The NLW contest winner of the Nook color e-reader is David Ortiz. The runner-up winner of the TI-84 Plus calculator is Yvette Wang. David and Yvette came closest to estimating the metric weight of the two-volume Samuel Johnson Dictionary of the English Language. The exact weight of the dictionary (displayed in the Special Collections Department of McDermott Library) is 12.51 kg. Congratulations, David and Yvette!

Celebrate National Library Week (Apr. 10-16) - Adrienne McLean Lecture "Dying Swans & Madmen"

Dr. Adrienne L. McLean, professor of film and aesthetic studies at UT Dallas, will begin McDermott Library's National Library Week observance with a presentation based on her recent book. Drawing on a range of film genres from musicals to melodramas, Dr. McLean will explore the ways that commercial films, including the recent hit "Black Swan" (2010), have produced an image of ballet and its artists that is associated with joy, fulfillment, fame, and power, and also with sexual and mental perversity, melancholy, and death. The McDermott Library seeks students interested in participating in the McDermott Student Advisory Group (MSAG). This group will meet with McDermott Library staff members throughout the year, in a partnership designed to assist the Library in better meeting the needs of its’ UTD patrons. Participation in MSAG is a great activity to include on your resume, as well as an opportunity to exercise your own voice on campus and represent your fellow students. If selected to be a part of MSAG, you’ll be asked to attend scheduled meetings and contribute to information-gathering conversations about various issues pertaining to the McDermott Library and its services. Digital Resource Expert Takes Helm at Library

Dr. Ellen Derey Safley, an authority on emerging library technologies and digitizing print collections, has been named the new director of the UT Dallas Eugene McDermott Library.

Safley succeeds Dr. Sheila Amin Gutiérrez de Piñeres, dean of Undergraduate Education, who had been serving as the chief administrator of the library on an interim basis since Dr. Larry Sall retired in February. Safley assumed her new role December 1.

EBSCO Databases Blocked By McAfee

McAfee---the virus protection software---is blocking access to all EBSCO databases (PsycInfo, Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, Historical Abstracts, MLA International Bibliography, etc.) for some unknown reason. Here's a work-around:

IN INTERNET EXPLORER
1. Right click the mouse up on the browser’s menu bar.
2. Choose McAfee SiteAdvisor Toolbar from the menu that opens.
3. Click on the Disable button.
4. Resart your browser.
5. Protect your computer from viruses! When you finish searching the EBSCO databases, re-enable the McAfee SiteAdvisor by following the same steps and clicking on the Enable button.

IN FIREFOX
1. In the Firefox menu bar, go to TOOLS.
2. Go to ADD-ONS.
3. Go to EXTENSIONS.
4. You will now see a list of the browser extensions installed in Firefox. McAfee Site Advisor Enterprise should be included in the list.
5. Directly underneath the listing for McAfee Site Advisor Enterprise, click on the DISABLE button.
6. Click on the RESTART FIREFOX button. Firefox will now close, and then reopen.
7. At this point you should be able to resume using the EBSCOhost databases as before.
8. Protect your computer from viruses! When you finish searching the EBSCO databases, re-enable the McAfee Site Advisor by repeating the steps above and clicking ENABLE (in step 5).

NTDB-GLOBUS Database Discontinued

STAT-USA, formerly the provider for the NTDB-GLOBUS global marketing and economics database, has discontinued NTDB-GLOBUS. The library will be pulling all references to the database off our site immediately.

Users will find many suitable alternatives to NTDB-GLOBUS in the list of databases on the Business & Management Databases subject page. In the meantime, the library will be working to find additional replacement resources for this now defunct database.

Questions about the status of NTDB and alternatives to it may be directed to the reference librarians. We appreciate our users' patience and understanding.

SciFinder Is Now on the Web ... ONLY

The library's subscription to SciFinder Scholar has converted from the client-side version (the version that required downloading and installing to one's computer) completely over to the Web-only version of SciFinder aka SciFinder Web. Users who have the old client version of the software will find that it no longer works and are encouraged to uninstall it from their computers.

Users are instructed to go to the "S" listing of databases and follow the instructions listed there to register for a SciFinder Web account. Alternatively, they may follow the instructions listed below:

To access SciFinder you must first register for a personal account by clicking on the registration link (see above).

E-Books Unavailable on Elsevier

The addition of a new service, SciVerse, to Elsevier's ScienceDirect has caused an interruption to e-book service on the site. E-book content to which the library subscribes is inaccessible, whether the user tries to access it via Elsevier's ScienceDirect or through the library catalog. Journal access remains unaffected. We appreciate your patience while we work to resolve this issue.
