SPIEDigital Library provides the world’s largest collection of optics and photonics research, with papers spanning biomedicine, communications, sensors, defense and security, manufacturing, electronics, energy, and imaging.

Check out the display behind the Information Desk on the 2nd floor! In it, you will find audio titles that can be checked out from a variety of places both in and outside of the library:

  • Leisure Reading Collection [rear right corner, 2nd floor]: bestseller-type popular books on CD, e.g., Game of Thrones series, Nicholas Sparks, and Dan Brown. 
  • Multimedia Desk [rear of 2nd floor]: academic and classic books on CD, e.g., Great Courses/Teaching Company lecture series, Shakespeare dramatizations, and language learning.

Adobe eBooks NOT Available from OverDrive (Downloadable Books for eReaders)


On Sunday night (6/1), the Download Books for eReaders service (AKA OverDrive) discovered that users attempting to download Adobe eBooks (Adobe EPUB eBooks) or activate a new Adobe ID on the Adobe Digital Editions platform could not do so. Previously downloaded Adobe eBooks have not been affected.

Adobe is actively working to bring services back online and we will update you at that time.

Full-Access Rosetta Stone Is Here!



We are proud to announce that users may now start at any level of proficiency when choosing a language to learn on the Rosetta Stone database. For those new to it, Rosetta Stone is an online language learning program that tests reading, writing, listening and speaking proficiency for over 20 languages, including Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Spanish (European and Latin American), Vietnamese, and English (British and American). Try it out today!

4th Annual Haiku Contest Winner!


Congratulations! Madeline Renals (Senior, Mathematical Sciences) is the winner of the 4th Annual Haiku Contest! For National Poetry Month (April), we asked that students submit library-themed haikus for the chance of winning an Amazon.com gift card. A total of 66 haikus were received from 35 contestants. Here is the winning haiku:

Scents of coffee drift gently
Thoughts flow easily

Do You Haiku? Celebrate National Poetry Month


Do you haiku?

In honor of National Poetry Month, the McDermott Library Reference Department is holding the 4th ANNUAL HAIKU CONTEST.


Submit your original library-themed haiku (3 lines: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables) to MATT MAKOWKA (mattmm@utdallas.edu) by April 30th via your UTD e-mail account, SUBJECT: Haiku Contest 2014. The winner will be selected during the first week of May.


The winner will:
• Receive an Amazon.com gift card.
• Have his/her work prominently displayed at the library, on its website, and in social media.
• Earn serious bragging rights.

Legal fine print: All haikus submitted become property of the Eugene McDermott Library. The contest is for currently enrolled UTD students only. May the best haiku win!

Check them out next time you need a place to prepare for your next test or presentation. The Longhorn Room is located at MC 3.444 and The Jalapeno Room is MC 3.602.

McDermott Library Shows Off Creative Side for Good Cause

We're out on the mall participating in Raising Cans, an annual event where various groups on campus create sculptures out of canned goods and other non-perishable items. The event benefits the Comet Cupboard. Come cheer us on as we compete for the most creative sculpture or to see if we have the most items.
