Change in Library Access This Weekend

This weekend, the library will be transitioning from 8-digit UTD-ID numbers to full 10-digit UTD-ID numbers for accessing catalog records, patron accounts, and Interlibrary Loan (ILL). If you find you cannot access any of these services with the 8-digit version of your UTD-ID (the last 8-digits), try again with the entire UTD-ID number.

NOTE: Access to electronic resources (databases, e-journals, and e-books) will NOT be affected by this change. Your NetID and password will continue to be used for access to electronic resources.

Daylight Savings Time Ends This Weekend, Nov. 6. Set Your Clocks BACK 1 Hour!

On Sunday, Nov. 6th, at 2:00am, clocks will be TURNED BACK ONE HOUR to 1:00am local standard time (i.e., Daylight Savings Time ends).

Watch the Chess Tournament at the Library!

The chess tournament for the Transatlantic Cup between UT Dallas and the University of Belgrade will be taking place today at two locations on campus: in the Davidson Auditorium of the Naveen Jindal School of Management and in the McDermott Library Conference Room (MC 4.214) located on the fourth floor. Both events begin promptly at 12:30pm. Light refreshments will be served at the library.

UT Dallas team members play their University of Belgrade counterparts via Internet hookup in the 2009 Transatlantic Cup contest.

Writing Help in the Library by the Writing Center Starting This Sunday

Beginning this Sunday, Sept. 11, the Library will be hosting drop-in writing help sessions by the Writing Center from 2-5pm in the Library Instruction Room (MC 2.524). The Writing Center will sponsor these sessions every Sunday at the same time for the remainder of the semester (9/11 through 12/11).

WestLaw is Down - UPDATE

The WestLaw Campus Research legal database is down due to technical difficulties. We are working to restore service to it as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.

UPDATE on Westlaw Campus Research: the library has spoken to the administrators at WestLaw, who have informed us that service will be restored when they reboot the database server tomorrow (Tue.) morning. Should there be any additional delays to the restoration of service, we will post an update on the status of WestLaw as needed.

National Library Week Contest Winners

The NLW contest winner of the Nook color e-reader is David Ortiz.  The runner-up winner of the TI-84 Plus calculator is Yvette Wang.  David and Yvette came closest to estimating the metric weight of the two-volume Samuel Johnson Dictionary of the English Language.  The exact weight of the dictionary (displayed in the Special Collections Department of McDermott Library) is 12.51 kg.  Congratulations, David and Yvette!

Celebrate National Library Week (Apr. 10-16) - Adrienne McLean Lecture "Dying Swans & Madmen"

Dr. Adrienne L. McLean, professor of film and aesthetic studies at UT Dallas, will begin McDermott Library's National Library Week observance with a presentation based on her recent book. Drawing on a range of film genres from musicals to melodramas, Dr. McLean will explore the ways that commercial films, including the recent hit "Black Swan" (2010), have produced an image of ballet and its artists that is associated with joy, fulfillment, fame, and power, and also with sexual and mental perversity, melancholy, and death. Free and open to the public.

McDermott Student Advisory Group (MSAG) Seeks Qualified Applicants!

Attention Students:

The McDermott Library seeks students interested in participating in the McDermott Student Advisory Group (MSAG). This group will meet with McDermott Library staff members throughout the year, in a partnership designed to assist the Library in better meeting the needs of its’ UTD patrons. Participation in MSAG is a great activity to include on your resume, as well as an opportunity to exercise your own voice on campus and represent your fellow students. If selected to be a part of MSAG, you’ll be asked to attend scheduled meetings and contribute to information-gathering conversations about various issues pertaining to the McDermott Library and its services. Dinner will be provided during the meetings.

Highwire E-Journals Up

Access to Highwire journals has been restored. Please disregard the earlier post. We apologize for any inconvenience the outage may have caused our patrons.

Highwire E-Journals Down

The servers at Highwire are malfunctioning and will give the user a “Forbidden” error message when trying to access full-text content. The following e-journal content is currently inaccessible:

• All Sage e-journals

• All Oxford e-journals

• All Lyell Collection e-journals

• The American Medical Association e-journals are partially affected; some titles are working, some are not.

Other journals that we have failed to catch may be affected as well. We ask our users for their patience while we work with Highwire to restore access as quickly as possible.

Digital Resource Expert Takes Helm at Library

Dr. Ellen Derey Safley, an authority on emerging library technologies and digitizing print collections, has been named the new director of the UT Dallas Eugene McDermott Library.

Safley succeeds Dr. Sheila Amin GutiƩrrez de PiƱeres, dean of Undergraduate Education, who had been serving as the chief administrator of the library on an interim basis since Dr. Larry Sall retired in February. Safley assumed her new role December 1.
