Searching in WorldCat now available in Arabic

Users of OCLC’s FirstSearch may now navigate the service using a new Arabic language interface. This is OCLC’s most recent response to the growing number of international users using the FirstSearch service in their native languages. The Arabic language interface allows Arabic-capable users to navigate the series of search and retrieval screens in the FirstSearch service. WorldCat, OCLC’s cooperative catalogue, has more than 350,000 bibliographic records referring to Arabic materials held by OCLC member libraries. Users may now search in Arabic script and display the results in the language of the bibliographic record. Translations of online Help are also available. To optimally view the Arabic interface, users will need to have Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or higher, or Netscape version 6 or higher.

The database, WorldCat, contains the catalog records of thousands of libraries worldwide and provides information on millions of books, newspapers, maps, periodicals, government documents, etc. One of the most important resources for determining which library owns a particular work.

Library Event - Lecture: "Identity Theft and Other Personal Crimes"

Identity Theft and Other Personal Crimes

Dr. E. Douglas Harris, executive director of the CyberSecurity and Emergency Preparedness Institute in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), will give a free lecture titled “Identity Theft and Other Personal Cyber Crimes” at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22 in UTD’s McDermott Library Auditorium (MC 2.410).

Millie DeAnda, president of the North Texas Crime Commission, will join Harris in the presentation. According to Harris, millions of dollars are extorted from U.S. citizens each year, and most are unaware of how it happens. The talk will alert people about identity theft and other methods “cyber criminals” employ. Harris will include portions of a video by the U.S. Department of the Treasury that provides information about how to outsmart cyber crooks.

The talk is a part of the McDermott Library Lecture Series, which was designed to provide the public with an opportunity to hear and understand the types of research being conducted by UTD faculty and staff.

Again, this event will be March 22 at 2pm in the McDermott Library Auditorium.

For more information about the lecture, please contact Tom Koch at 972-883-4951.

Security & Off-Campus Access

To the University of Texas at Dallas Community,

Due to a cyber assault on the University Library’s online resources, we have added an extra layer of security to the system. When accessing our online resources from a remote location, you will now be asked for your last name as well as you Comet Card number. Your last name will go in a separate field and will be encrypted. It is extremely important that you do not share your Comet Card number, and if you lose your Comet Card, alert the Comet Card office immediately. We are working with the Information Resources staff to protect our resources from misuse and unauthorized access that could threaten everyone’s access to these materials. Your understanding and cooperation are appreciated.

Dean of Libraries
The University of Texas at Dallas

Attention UTD Wireless Users! Important Change Needed on Personal Laptops

Because of a recent fix/upgrade of the campus-wide wireless network, all wireless users will need to reconfigure the wireless cards on their personal laptops for connecting to the AirUTD Wireless Network. Easy-to-follow instructions for Windows XP users are provided on the Information Resources site.

Users can also bring their laptop computers to the IR Technical Support Office in Jonsson (JO 3.906) for in-person help. Because the office is currently very busy with the new spring semester, users are strongly encouraged to make an appointment (assist@utdallas.edu or 972-883-2911) before coming to the office. Users may also seek help via online forms: UTD Help Desk and Computing Help Desk.
